The U.S. Supreme Court moved to limit employment law claims by public employees, ruling against a former Oregon Department of Agriculture employee Monday. In its decision, the Court rejected Anup Engquist’s “class of one” argument, which claimed that her employer had fired her for “arbitrary, vindictive, and malicious” reasons.
Chief Justice Roberts, writing for the majority, said that, to permit public employee cases on such a “class of one” basis would force governments to bear an unreasonable burden of lawsuits based on subjective and vague grounds. The Court held that, in order to file an employment lawsuit, public employees must prove that illegal discrimination took place.
