School district faces discrimination lawsuit

May 5th, 2010 · No Comments

Two former employees of the Fort Worth, Texas, school district have sued the district for racial discrimination leading to their termination. The two African-American women were told that their department was going to be eliminated, but they allege that the real reason was so the district could fire minority employees.

The former employees noted that white employees were later hired to perform the jobs from which the two women had previously been let go. The district denies the claim, saying the women were let go because of a climbing budget deficit.

Wal-Mart faces gender bias suit

April 30th, 2010 · No Comments

Six women filed a lawsuit against Wal-Mart in 2001 alleging gender bias against female employees regarding pay and benefits. Nearly 10 years and several appeals later, they are still fighting to represent more than 1.5 million women.

Wal-Mart has been trying to separate the accusations of the women into separate cases, but the company has not been successful. The women say that Wal-Mart pays women less than men for the same jobs and makes it much more difficult for women to get promotions.

An African-American former employee for Mud Technology International, Inc., in Marshall, Texas, recently filed a lawsuit accusing his former co-workers and supervisors of violating his civil rights by using discriminatory expressions about his race. He claims he did not receive a pay raise because of his race. He also said he was fired after the company’s owner used a racial slur about him and told the supervisor to fire him.

The plaintiff said his termination was in violation with company policy, because he was never notified about his alleged performance deficiencies. He said that other African-American employees at the company are treated similarly.

Former employee files age discrimination suit

April 14th, 2010 · No Comments

A former Suddenlink Communications employee who is older than 40 recently filed a lawsuit against the company for age discrimination. The suit claims the man was fired based on an off-color joke he made after work hours and not at the office. He was among some coworkers, who were allegedly making similar jokes, but one coworker complained about the joke to his supervisors and the man was terminated.

The man claims that the coworker, who is under the age of 40, made a similar joke but was not terminated. He also claims that another factor in his termination was his complaint against a manager whom he believed to be sexually harassing some other coworkers.
